What Valuable Lesson Did Your Mother Teach You?By Ann Newstead PT, DPT, PhDMany of us may think back to messages our mothers sent to us when we were younger. And now as we enter our next decade of life, those messages ring even more true. Here are some of the resounding messages from my mother (and maybe yours too):Stand straight – posture is important for your spine. Oftentimes neck and back pain begin with poor posture. Poor posture may lead to weakness and stiffness. Sitting on couches for hours can lead to additional pain and strain of your neck and back.Get plenty of sleep – sleep helps rejuvenate your body. Sleep is a time to recover. Whether you work in our outdoors, your body needs rest to restore its normal functioning. Most productive sleep is between 7-9 hours per night.Eat your vegetables – veggies are vital to your health. The natural vitamins and minerals help with your digestion, lower your blood pressure, reduce risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and protect against some cancers.Get fresh air daily – fresh air and exercise lead to overall better health. Your body craves movement. Why do you think your muscles get stiff and painful after sitting? Or why you have dizziness, lightheadness, vertigo when you stand up suddenly? A daily brisk walk is a good way to start. Join a group.Say, please and thank you – be kind to others. Ask for help when you need it.Volunteer – staying active by giving of your time to help others.Thank you to my mother for all of her support and kindness to our family andHELOTES CITY COUNCIL MEMBER ELECT PLACE 5I look forward to serving Helotes and being an advocate for the community’s best interest.About Buck Russel:• City of Helotes Planning and Zoning Commissioner• Union Pacific Railroad Senior Supervisor of Public Safety • U.S. Air Force Veteran• Former Texas Peaced Officerwww.buckrusselforhelotes.comPolitical advertisement paid for by the Buck Russel Campaign Account.
