My Mom’s Ultimate Power CBy Sonny Melendrez of Attorneyarmen Melendrez “employed” a whole roster of lawyers throughout her life. Each one specialized in a different kind of crisis—and more often than not, they came through.Of course, these weren’t lawyers in the traditional sense. They were saints. That’s what Mom called the holy figures she prayed to, believing they interceded for her directly with God.No matter the dilemma, Mom always found a saint and a way. When she wasn’t praying for divine intervention, she was quietly stepping in to solve things herself—with the kind of peaceful, steady faith that moved mountains.Take the time I was 15 and had a minor accident on a rented motor scooter at Brackenridge Park. I went straight through a turn lane while the car next to me turned right. We collided. I got a ticket—and a big problem. We didn’t dare tell Dad. I wasn’t even supposed to be out of the neighborhood on my bicycle, let alone on something with a motor.A court date was set. Mom stayed calm. “I’ll talk to my lawyer,” she said, meaning St. Jude—the patron saint of impossible causes. “He’ll ask God to help us.”On the day of my hearing, we sat nervously in the courtroom until my name was called. That’s when we were told the officer who issued the ticket hadn’t shown up. Case dismissed.I don’t know what St. Jude said—but I know my mother’s prayer was heard.Mom never passed up a chance to light a candle in a nearby Catholic church. Most lunch breaks, she’d slip away for a quick visit to her heavenly legal team. One day, her Jewish boss, observing her regular pilgrimages, turned to a co-worker and asked, “What could Carmen possibly have done that she needs to ask for so much forgiveness?!”Ever since Mom left us a few years ago, my brother Rick and I find comfort in knowing heaven gained its sweetest, most faithful “lawyer.” And she’s still working cases on our behalf.Sonny Melendrezis an award-winningmotivational speaker,Hall of Fame radio/TV host and author, based in San Antonio. For more of his enthusiastic brand of inspiration and speaking information, visit www.SonnyMelendrez.com and listen to his podcast.Toddler Paint & PlayArtistic Explorations Grades: Kindergarten - 8thPre-K Art PlayTiny TreehousesCardboard Creationsand more!scholarships they might have received.
