FBy Sally Kalosrustrated by repeated mailboxbreak-ins, a group of neighborscame together to address the issue, submitting complaints to their HOA and coordinating efforts to find a solution.Mailbox break-ins began over a year ago and have since become a widespread issue across the city. Residents repeatedly filed complaints with the HOA, the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD), and the Post Office. The main targets were the community’s cluster mailboxes. It was later discovered that the perpetrator had access to a master key, which opens all cluster mailboxes. According to their mailman, the same master key can unlock multiple mailbox panels. Despite notifying the Post Office, residents learned that there were over 700 work orders pending to replace mailbox locks. The turning point came when the neighborhood’s children began noticing the break-ins. One morning, a young boy on his way to school found mail scattered on the ground in front of an open mailbox. Confused but determined, he knelt and started putting the mail back. A nearby neighbor, inspired by the boy’s actions, thanked him for his kind heart and promised to take over. When residents contacted the Post Office, they were told that similar incidentshad been reported across San Antonio. The Post Office suggested paying for a P.O. Box or having mail held at their facility as a precaution. With progress being slow to correct the problem, neighbors decided to take matters into their own hands. They installed a surveillance camera near the cluster mailboxes, funded by a community collection. The camera was installed shortly thereafter, around October 21, 2024, with a neighbor granting permission to place the equipment in their yard directly behind the mailboxes. The most recent break-in occurred early on Halloween morning. This time, the newly installed camera captured clear video evidence of the suspect in action. Armed with this footage, SAPD identified the suspect’s vehicle and made an arrest. News4SA also highlighted the incident in a story aired on November 1, 2024.The presence of the camera proved to be a game-changer. Since the arrest, the neighborhood has not experienced any further mailbox break-ins.For communities facing similar challenges, here’s the advice from these proactive neighbors:1. Gather Evidence: Without clear photo or video evidence, do not expect significant action from the HOA, SAPD, or the PostOffice.2. Invest in the Right Equipment: Use a solar-powered camera with light and night vision. The Reolink camera was effective in this case.3. File Complaints: Submitting complaints through the Post Office website and to SAPD is crucial.4. Utilize Technology: The Post Office offers an app that provides notifications and images of incoming mail. This helps residents track what’s delivered and identify stolen items.5. Report Thefts: Prosecutors require theft reports and victims willing to prove what was stolen for cases to proceed. Video evidence alone is not enough.Raising awareness about mailbox break-ins is essential. Many residents were unaware of the issue until it was brought to light. As one neighbor put it:“We all have to do our part to ensure our communities hold criminals accountable. Choosing to do nothing only perpetuates the problem. Together, we can create change.”Since the community’s efforts and the suspect’s arrest, the neighborhood has remained break-in free—a testament to the power of collective action and determination.Kaleb Rogers : A Reagan RattlerMailbox Break-Ins: A Neighborhood Unites To Take ActionCaleb Crider : A Senior Leader OnSBy Sally Kalosenior at Ronald Reagan High School, Caleb Crider has excelled academically and athletically as aRattler.
