At What Age Should You Stop Dreaming?BAy Sonny Melendrezfew years back, I had the distinct pleasure of serving as the emcee at the opening ceremonies of theInternational Senior Olympic Games, held at San Antonio’s historic Alamo Stadium. It was there I met Harry, a golf enthusiast whose story was both inspiring and unexpected. When I asked Harry how he came to love golf, he shared a charming tale. Despite his friends’ long-standing passion for the sport, Harry was content riding along in the golf cart. One day, he decided to pick up a club, hit a few balls, and, as he put it, “I’ve been hooked ever since.”Curious about his journey, I asked how long ago this newfound passion began. “Twenty-two years ago,” he replied. I was taken aback when he revealed his age at the time: “Eighty.” Now, at 102 years old, Harry still plays golf with the enthusiasm of someone decades younger. His enduring love for the game blossomed well into his senior years, proving that age is no barrier to starting something new. Then there’s Gladys Burrill, who reached the remarkable age of 100 and whose legendary adventurous spirit defied all expectations. A accomplished pilot, horseback rider, and mountain climber, Gladys gained fame for her remarkable achievements in her 90s. At 86, she completed her first marathon, and at 92, she famously finished the Honolulu Marathon after a grueling 9 hours and 53 minutes of power-walking. Her extraordinary feat earned her recognition from Guinness World Records and the Hawaii House of Representatives. These remarkable individuals remindBWy Debbie Seguinords are powerful, but there are few words in life that feel like a bomb exploding. The word cancer is one of them. There are few difficulties in life that can compare with the monumental task of facing that word, fighting that word, surviving that word, overcoming that word. Only those who have experienced this battle can really attest to its steady and insidious toll; a “you had to be there” kind of experience that no one deserves nor is fully prepared for.But surviving this battle – tested warriors become mentors and heroes for those who have yet to fight. These heroes are to be honored for their bravery and tenacity in the face of overwhelming difficulties. We have many women in our own community who have faced this foe, fought this foe, conquered this foe and Highlights publications wants to honor your hero!
