By Dr. Ann NewsteadMany of us may think back to messages our mother’s sent to us when we were younger. And now as we enter our next decade of life, those messages ring even more true. Each decade holds a new challenge. We may have taken young bodies during our youth for granted. We have challenged our body in ways that now we are “paying for it”.Every week I provide physical therapy to people who have had an injury, accident, or incident that began during their youth. From neck pain to back pain, or dizziness and vertigo, or weakness and lack of functional abilities to walk, and/ or osteoarthritis to osteoporosis. Is it too late to take action? I say the answer is “no”.Here are some the resounding messages from my mother:Stand straight – posture is important for your spine. Oftentimes neck and back pain begin with poor posture. Poor posture may lead to weakness and stiffness. Sitting on couches for hours can lead to additional pain and strain of your neck and back.Get plenty of sleep – sleep helps rejuvenate your body. Sleep is a time to recover. Whether you work in our outdoors, your body needs rest to restore its normal functioning. Most productive sleep is between 7-9 hours per night.Eat your vegetables – veggies are vital to your health. The natural vitamins and minerals help with your digestion, lower your blood pressure, reduce risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and protect against some cancers.Get fresh air daily – fresh air and exercise lead to overall better health. Your body craves movement. Why do you think your muscles get stiff and painful after sitting? Or why you have dizziness, lightheadness, vertigo when you stand up suddenly? A daily brisk walk is a good way to start. Join a group.Say, please and thank you – be kind to others. One event was that the 4-H Duds to Dazzle teams participated in a competition which is where kids can make anything that can be in three topics which includes wearable, non-wearable, and accessory. Both Helotes intermediate teams took home 1st and 2nd place in the competition so both teams qualified for the District competition taking place in Fredericksburg April 21st. Another thing the Helotes 4-H did was hold a work day out at the Helotes AG Youth Ranch for cleanup and prepare for the upcoming archery competition. The kids helped clean up trash, cleared brush, mowed the pastures, fixed the fence and even went in the house and took outBy Daria Cosnowskithe flooring and old furniture which turned out to be really fun. The Helotes 4-H also visited Great Hearts Forest Heights School. The students talked about all the exciting things you need to know about 4-H and fun things to get involved in the 4-H club. Activities that were presented included the shotgun team, raising rabbits, archery and Duds to Dazzle.“Every two years, my high school, The Atonement Catholic Academy, makes a pilgrimage to Rome to experience the heartof our Faith in the center of Catholicism.I had the privilege of taking the 10-day trip with my Atonement family for my senior year. Unaccompanied by my parents, my school family watched over me. After more than 12 hours of travel, we arrived in Italy. Jet-lagged, I did not expect the first day to be packed, but it was, as was every day after! Each day was filled with so many activities, including hiking, touring museums, and lunch with friends. We also explored the beautiful cities and took in the enchanting religious experiences of St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel and otherwonderous churches. While our trip was a great travel experience, we also reflected as we attended daily Mass, prayed the Rosary and observed the Stations of the Cross for the sake of our religious flourishment. Wake-up call was 6:00 A.M., but my friends and I talked until 1:00 A.M., celebrating our friendships and experience. As the week progressed, I dreaded the thought of leaving, but was so grateful for those who worked so hard to make the trip possible. Sitting in the papal audience, listening to Pope Francis speak in my native Polish meant everything to me. This trip meant everything to me.” Daria Cosnowski, class of 2023.
