My mother is definition of a real-life superwoman. Growing upin a military family my father was always gone and deployed, and my mom would hold down the fort with me, my twin brother Joseph, and my oldest sister’s kids. All of us were close in age. So, it was like taking care of quadruplets. Many moves to new locations by herself and 4 young children, not sure how she did it.My parents divorced and my mother still raising all of us. My mother would always bust her bottom to make sure we were all taken care of. She worked a full- time job, managed to get all of us to all theextracurricular activities we were involved in all while attending law school. Many nights I would wake up and see my mom asleep at the kitchen table, I’m sure from exhaustion. I’m not sure how she continued all of this and still managing to get up and do it all over again every day. Because of my mother’s devotion to her kids and her career she is exactly who I want to be. My momisoneofakindandIjustwantherto know that although she always tells us she lives for us the real truth is we live because of her. She’s not only my mom but she’s also our real-life Super-Wonder Woman.ABy Georgia Jenningss Mother’s Day approaches, I amimmediately drawn to memoriesof my mother and the life she led. She graduated from a Wilmington NC high school, worked locally, and then in 1950 moved to Washington DC where she worked as a Secretary for a NC Representative until 1953.Wanting to travel she accepted an appointment with the US Air Force and was assigned to Ankara, Turkey where she met her soon-to-be husband who was stationed there with the Air Force. They married in 1955 and his foreign assignments carriedthem to many places around the world until his untimely death in Pretoria, South Africa at the age of 46. Alone in a foreign country with a 6 year old child she was faced with returning to US soil. She had given up a career to be a full- time wife and mother and I can’t imagine the strength and courage it took to start this new chapter. Though she has since passed, not a day goes by that I don’t think of her and am in awe of what she accomplished. She filled the roles of both parents and was responsible for molding me into the strong and independent woman I am.6www.heloteshighlights.comMay 2023
