Indian Springs Elementary Student Named 2023 Comal Shake ChampionSubmitted By Comal ISDAfourth-grade student from Indian Springs Elementary was named the 2023 Comal Shake champion on Friday, Jan. 13, in the Comal Independent School District’s annual competition designed to develop interpersonal skills. Lylah Yerrington, 10, was crowned the champion after advancing from her campus to the semifinals and then to the final round on Friday at the district’s Support Services office.For the ninth year in a row, the district hosted the Comal Shake competition to encourage elementary students to hone their interpersonal skills, specifically, starting conversations, showing confidence and shaking hands.It turns out that Yerrington is a natural conversationalist who made it to the final round last year and couldn’t wait to try her hand at it again.“I love talking to people,” Yerrington says. “I love making them laugh and just interacting with others. Last year, I was the youngest finalist, and while I didn’t win, it felt like I won inside.“I had this amazing feeling like I had something special, and I wanted to do it again. The six finalists are given two minutes with each of three judges to showcase their interpersonal skills.This year’s judges for the championship round included Superintendent Dr. John E. The lighting of theBulverde Tree, school children creating wonderful Christmas decorations, the voices of our neighbors singing Christmas carols on Christmas Eve and the generosity that they share with children that they may never know by donating to the Bulverde/ Spring Branch Angel’s Christmas Tree Project.Our 2022 Angel Tree Project donated Christmas gifts to 495 children from 195 families! Since we were founded in 2015, we have made it our annual mission to gift 4-5 presents to each child, from clothing items and 2-3 specific wishes from toys, bikes and teen items.We would like to thank our many volunteers, the CISD schools that work with us, the area churches, organizations, and corporations that act as our Christmas Tree sites and as financial sponsors, and the many families that “adopt” our ornaments and thus provide gifts to children in our community.In the words of Christian author, Ruth Carter Stapleton, “Christmas is most truly Christmas when we celebrate it by giving the light of love to those who need it most.” Our deepest thanks for making it Christmas. But, there’s something even more important than all that: the dress! Girls often spend hours searching stores and spending hundreds of dollars to get that perfect prom dress,hoping it’s unique.Bulverde Thrift Store wants to invite youto their annual event, All Dolled Up. At this event, young ladies in the community can hand-select the perfect prom dress for just$15. In addition to this, we offer a variety of jewelry, purses, and shoes for just $5 each. Every dress is unique, with a selection containing hundreds of different dresses and accessories in all sizes, colors, and styles. All Dolled Up will be hosted at Mammen Family Public Library on March 18th from 10-4.Donations of gently worn prom dresses and accessories can be delivered to Bulverde Thrift Store.
