umor By Kaye BrownHFWhen The Outside World Is Coming For Us In A Big Wayace it, old people, we have reached the age when the “outside” world is coming for us in a big way. They areplanning to get rid of us by not allowing us to use anything that comes prepackaged. It started slowly, about the time some idiot claimed to have put something in Tylenol in a drug store somewhere. Then, everybody jumped on the bandwagon. Before that it was only things like baby aspirin that was labeled deadly and the first thing my 3-year-old opened by herself when she thought I wasn't quick enough on the draw to relieve her headache.About the time I turned 65, I noticed that companies were starting to amp up their packaging. At first, I thought it was to protect us and I'm sure that was the original intent, but somewhere along the line it became a game of “them versus us”. I can just imagine the conversation amongthe CEO’s in research and development at all major companies. It goes like this, “I have this burning desire to get back at my parents for making me eat spinach when I was a kid, so let's play some tricks on them and see how they like it.”The first suggestion was to make jar lids so tight that it is simpler to just break the lid off the jar and hope the shards of glass will land outside the contents. Ladies and gentlemen, how about those cans with the pull tab? So simple even a caveman can do it, right? Yeah, if you're a caveman you’ve got it made. If you’re a real person with the strength in your hands of a two year old, good luck with that. After I sprain my wrist getting the tab up, I then have to get a kitchen knife to pry up the lid so I can gently remove the contents. TADA! I'm done and it only took me 5 minutes.Next, just the simple wrapping ofpackages of toilet paper. Pretty simple, right? Nope! They made them about 5 layers thick, so you need scissors for that. The packaging for handy dandy side dishes and cheese that come in packages that have notches to pull off the top strip and then easy openings that are “not” easy. Gotta find my glasses so I can see where the tiny notch is, then I just get the scissors and cut the whole top off. I keep my scissors in a holster on my belt when I'm fixing any kind of food. I feel like the Dale Evans of cooking. My absolute favorite kind of packaging is the kind that wraps all non food products in hard plastic shaped like the product. I cry when I have to buy something like that. I know it will take scissors, a screwdriver, a hammer, a box cutter, four curse words and 3 band aids to get it open.BF and I spent a couple of nights in a hotel last month and I couldn't get the sugar, creamer or coffee packets open without my scissors. Oh, yeah, I carry my scissors everywhere. I'm like a super heroine, alwaysSOLBA Recognizes The Landing AtStone Oak Memory CareBTy Staffand Wendee Wendland, Executive Director, of The Landing at Stone Oak Memory Care for hosting the Business Coffee Connections for three events.
