Patients at Stone Oak Vision Source can now receive Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy for relief. Once onlyrecommends combining IPL with bipolar radiofrequency to target inflammation in the glands around the eyelids.Blocked oil glands are the most common cause of dry eye, which can lead to swelling and irritation around the eyelids, as well as watering, burning eyes. Ocular rosacea, a prevalent condition in South Texas due to intense sun exposure and heat, is often a contributing factor. Extended use of computers and phones can also worsen the condition, as it reduces blinking and can lead to the degradation of the healthy oil film that keeps tears from evaporating. Dr. Mann explains that the glands can start producing a healthy tear film once the blockage is cleared, which is crucial for clear, comfortable vision.Dr. Mann’s practice, known for its comprehensive approach to visual and ocular health, is now recognized as a leader in innovative eye care treatments. Key partner CooperVision, a global leader in advanced contact lens technologies, recently launched The Myopia Collective in collaboration with the American Optometric Association (AOA), in which Dr. Mann has been selected as an inaugural leader, representing the state of Texas!Myopia is another easily and effectively treated condition using state-of-the-art technology and progressive medicine. Myopia is “near-sightedness,” where the individual can see up close but not far away. The treatment would typically include eyeglasses or contacts, annual eye exams, and periodic updates to the prescription as the condition progresses. However, there are now better options and ways to stop the progression of myopia which is vision impairing and can lead to other severe and permanent eye damage, including retinal detachment.Dr. Mann reports seeing cases of myopia in children at a much younger age than in past generations. Though there is a myriad of supporting data on contributing factors (i.e., genetics, less outdoor exposure), Dr. Mann suspects it’s in large part due to early computer and phone screen exposure. Dr. Mann, who caters to children’s vision, uses technology and other methods to slow and stop the progression of the disease—something unheard of for most adults.Ortho-K (short for orthokeratology) is a method that involves the overnight use of specially designed gas- permeable contacts to reshape the cornea. The individual (whether a child or an adult) wears the contacts while sleeping and removes them in the morning. They can then go about their day without needing eyewear, all while maintaining clear vision, slowing/halting the progression of their prescription, and experiencing fewer hassles. For adults, this method serves as an alternative to Lasik surgery.Stone Oak Vision Source will be offering Myopia Awareness Day on Friday, August 9, from 8-2 pm.
