Healthy School Lunches Your KidsWill Actually Want to EatBIy Caitlin Ogletreet’s back to school time and with that comes the challenge of packing school lunches. It can be stressful tocreate nutritious meals that your kids will actually want to eat, so here are my expert tips to take the stress out of lunches and keep everyone happy and healthy this school year.Presentation can make a huge difference, so invest in a fun lunchbox and a few containers. Bento boxes are a great option as they allow for variety with the divided compartments and keep food visually appealing. A thermos type container is also useful for packing warm lunches- prep the container by letting hot water sit in it for a few minutes before packing the food.Get creative and think outside of the box when packing. Instead of the normal PBJ, use a whole grain wrap- roll it up and cut it into pieces mimicking sushi. Create a homemade pizza lunchable using pita bread, shredded cheese and marinara sauce. Prep a fiber rich pasta salad using protein pasta, beans, and chopped veggies and let your kiddo choose their dressing. It’s Backto School!Call today to schedule your child’s eye exam & help them get off to a great new school year!$100 offMyopia Management Treatments Expires Aug.31, 2024Dr. Chandler R Mann II20079 Stone Oak Pkwy., Suite 1104 San Antonio, TX 78258(830) 205-2420www.stoneoakvisionsource.comGetting the kids involved is an easy way to increase their satisfaction!Always aim for balance by including a mix of protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats to ensure they are energized and focused for the remainder of the day. You may have children who are outof school which could mean a different daily schedule. You could be traveling or socializing more which includes more calorie heavy meal and drink choices. Planning is still the way to keep things in order. Knowing that the children are home plan a time where they can help prep the snacks for the week.Grill your meats for the week to ensure that you have something in the refrigerator and not have to stop at a drive thru. It is the season for fresh fruit and salads; take advantage of that. Most restaurants have great seasonal salads during the summer. Raw veggies are an excellent snack for a hot day. If you feel like your activity level decreases during the hotter summer months get creative with getting in youractivity. Of course, swimming is one of the best forms of exercise so this is definitely a great way to stay active. Have races with the kids/ friend/ spouse to increase the intensity. When in the house or sitting around turn the music up and have a dance party. Choose various tempo songs to keep the heartrate up. Still making the decision to make healthy choices or to get in intentional exercise when it is the season of fun can be very difficult however, you don’t want all the hard work that you have been doing to go to waste. Seek out summertime challenges to participate in to help keep you on track. To say that you are not going to have any of your summertime favorites isn’t realistic so make the majority of your choices good ones if possible so that you don’t miss out on any of the summertime fun!August 2024www.stoneoakhighlights.com 7
