Ballet Dancer Marlow Benavides Looks Forward To Performing In Don QuixoteMBy Sally Kalosarlow, an 8th grade student fromBush Middle School, classicallytrained ballet dancer, is part of the pre-professional division at the San Antonio Ballet School. She began her dance journey in 2013, initially exploring tap, jazz, and ballet, but it was her participation in the Moscow Ballet’s The Nutcracker as part of their youth cast that ignited her love forballet.For Marlow, watching older dancerschallenge themselves is both inspiring and instructive, as it helps her identify areas for personal growth. Reflecting on her own progress motivates her to continue learning and improving.Dance has brought about significantchanges in Marlow. She has had to cultivate greater focus, push beyond her physical and mental comfort zones, forge like-minded friendships, and learn to manage her time and priorities effectively.Marlow has an impressive performance history, including Nutcracker 2022, Firebird 2022, Mayor’s Ball 2023, Nutcracker 2023, and SAACM Legacy Ball 2024. She is currently preparing for two upcoming dance shows, including the role of Constanza in Don Quixote in June. Marlow’s pride in her younger sister, Lila, who will also be dancing in Don Quixote, is evident as she observes her sister’s growth with joy.AmongMarlow’sotheraccomplishments are winning the Starbound NationalCompetition Elite Winner 2023, receiving the NEISD Student Volunteer Award Silver Level 2023, earning the Most Improved Choir Award 2022, receiving the President’s Education Award for Academic Excellence 2021, receiving the Strings Program Award for Violin 2021, and receiving the Award of Merit for Visual Art PTA Reflections. She is also a member of the National Junior Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society.Looking ahead, Marlow eagerly anticipates the opportunity to volunteer as a teacher for young ballerinas at the San Antonio Ballet School during the summer.LBy Sally Kalosila Benavides, a student at BushMiddle School, recently celebratedher 12th birthday. Her passion for ballet was ignited by watching her older sister perform, finding it a magnificent art form. She deeply admires her sister’s dedication and passion for dance, noting that working together on techniques and productions has not only strengthened their bond but also provided enjoyableexperiences, like their collaboration on “The Nutcracker.”Reflecting on her journey with the San Antonio Youth Ballet, Lila credits a great teacher for inspiring her to push her limits while keeping the learning process enjoyable. Through dance, she has learned valuable time management skills, balancing her practice with schoolwork and friendships.Despite her love for dance, many are surprised to learn that Lila has a background in gymnastics and acrobatics, experiences that have served as stepping stones to becoming a better dancer. She has found ways to incorporate her gymnastics skills into her ballet, adding a unique flair to her performances.Currently, Lila is diligently preparing for her next performance alongside her sister in the upcoming presentation of “Don Quixote.” She finds joy in having her sister by her side, motivating, and encouraging her.
