A retired psychiatric nurse, she holds a master’s degree and spent more than 30 years working in psychiatry, including a decade in substance abuse counseling as an LPC, alongside her RN career. Ruth also taught psychiatry and worked in hospitals and doctors’ offices, leaving behind a legacy of compassionate care. For the past two years, Ruth has lived at Franklin Park Sonterra, a move she made after a health scare prompted her to reconsider living alone. With her doctor’s guidance and her family’s support, she chose Franklin Park Sonterra for its welcoming environment and supportive staff. “I needed the peace of mind of being somewhere safe, and this was the right choice,” she says.Life at Franklin Park Sonterra has been fulfilling. Ruth remains active in her church community, enjoys activities like bingo and learning mahjong, and serves as president of the Advisory Council, acting as a liaison between residents and administration. She values the council’s strong relationship with leadership, which she feels makes Franklin Park Sonterra unique. Most of all, she cherishes the community of residents who share diverse life experiences and backgrounds. To newcomers, Ruth encourages bringing familiar furnishings and keepsakes to make the transition easier. She praises the friendly staff—from housekeeping to dining—and notes the many engaging activities. “If you’re bored here, it’s because you’re staying in your room,” she laughs. Now 83, Ruth continues to live life with purpose. Her family finds comfort knowing she is safe and supported, and she herselfappreciates the balance of independence and community. “No place is perfect,” Ruth reflects, “but Franklin Park Sonterra has given me peace of mind, companionship, and the ability to keep living fully.”For more information and to get a tour of Franklin Park Sonterra, call Tina Tedford at (210) 404-1444. "When we revised the will, the attorney suggested it would be easier on my kids if I sold the house," he explains. His son and daughter-in-law have taken the lead on that process, allowing Shorty to focus on this new chapter.Life at Franklin has brought relief and joy. “I don’t have to worry about the house or cooking,” Shorty says with a smile. “The meals are fantastic, and the social life is outstanding. The residents and staff are wonderful.” He enjoys weekly pool sessions and uses the fitness center regularly.Perhaps most dear to him is the time he now has to continue his nonprofit work: fundraising for headstones for the San Antonio National Cemetery, Texas’ oldest military cemetery. “That mission got ahold of my heart and won’t let go,” he says. And now, thanks to Franklin Park, he's found others who are getting involved, too.For more information on life at Franklin Park Sonterra, come take a tour andA New Chapter for Shorty: Life at Franklin Park Sonterraexperience an amazing culinary experience in their beautiful dining room.
