Menopause, A Natural Time of LifeIBy Dr. Donna Beckert may be natural, but so is death! We take hormones because we want to live-not dwindle-until we die. Thehuman life span has increased from about 40-45 years in Roman times, to perhaps 80 years now. Thus, we may live 30-50 years in a hormonally deprived state which can lead to bone loss, brain shrinkage, and vastly decreased sexual energy. Without hormones, we suffer loss of collagen from skin which leads to wrinkling and sagging.Women often tell me, “I just want to get through it.” However, the brain never “gets through it” (menopause). For as long as a woman is alive, the pituitary gland in the brain secretes follicle stimulating hormone in a desperate attempt to jolt the ovaries so they will start producing estrogen again. It is true, the hot flashes and night sweats do decrease with time, perhaps in 3-to-5 years! But this is a terrible price to pay—exhaustion which may lead to sadness and even clinical depression. I have seen women who are in their late 50s or 60s who report YEARS of insomnia with temperature dysregulation (cold one minute, hot the next), “I can’t take it anymore” they say.Menopause occurs when the ovaries cease making hormones and menstrual cycles stop. Bone loss might be as much as 20% in the first 5 years of menopause. The three pillars of bone health: hormone replacement, adequate vitamin D, and weight bearing exercise. In one study, 35% of the men with low testosterone had low bone density (osteopenia). Dr. Morgentaler from Harvard Medical School and Men’s Health Boston, said “This new study reaffirms the importance of testosterone for bone health in men”. It may be natural to fall and break your hip if your testosterone has declined, but we can prevent it!Finally, do take hormones based on the blood levels of a young adult, preferably matching the blood levels a young woman averages 7-10 days after a period.
