If you are still working and have credible coverage through an employer, you may not need to enroll until you retire and drop that coverage. In many cases, however, Medicare is a better value and provides better coverage at lower cost. We can review this with you to see which is a better value for you and if you need help enrolling, we can show you how.2) Decide whether Medicare Advantage or Original Medicare is best for you. There are two primary ways to get your Medicare coverage, Medicare Advantage and Original Medicare with Medigap. Medicare Advantage was added as a cost saving measure and alternative to Original Medicare when Congress passed the Balanced Budget Act of 1997. We put together an easy-to-understand guide that compares and points out some of the major differences because they are significant.3) Enroll in Prescription Drug Coverage.Drug coverage is available for both Medicare Advantage and Original Medicare. If you do not enroll in a prescription drug plan when you first qualify, you may face a penalty of1% per month for every month you did not have coverage when you do enroll unless you had credible coverage through another source like an employer or the VA. If you choose Medicare Advantage, make sure drug coverage is included in your plan. When choosing Original Medicare you can enroll in a stand-alone Part D drug plan. We suggest shopping prescription coverage during the annual enrollment period (October 15th – December 7th) because plan formularies change every year.If you’re either new to Medicare or on Medicare and want a quick review, we can help!
