Did You Know?OBy Cynthia Leal Masseyld Town Helotes is a unique historic district, the original “downtown” founded in 1881, that became theheart of Helotes. It is different from most other historic districts or Main Streets in its architectural style—primarily simple, single- story buildings of limestone and wood— rather than two and three-story edifices of brick and stone. As a result, the ambience is laid-back and unpretentious.Old Town was once part of the 1,515- acre Marnoch Ranch, purchased in the fall of 1858 by Dr. George F. Marnoch, a Scottish physician. Adjacent to the ranch was the property of Carl “Charles” Mueller and his wife Amalie who settled in Helotes in 1862 on a few hundred acres. The Muellers were an entrepreneurial couple and soon established a stagecoach stop on theirlocation of Bandera Road at its crossing with Helotes Creek. Gugger’s plan was to make this site the retail area of Helotes. In 1881, he built his family homestead, a general store, blacksmith shop, and a saloon. Seven years later, he became the third postmaster, taking the job from Amalie Mueller, who was herself in legal trouble with the post office. The general store became the new location for the Helotes post office and a central hub for the community, and the town became a rest stop for cattle drovers going to and from San Antonio to market.Gugger sold his property in 1903 and moved his family to San Antonio. The town struggled through the years, never becoming the downtown Gugger likely envisioned. Nevertheless, it became the type of historic district it was destined to be, with entrepreneurs such as Bert Hileman, James and Kate Riggs, and John T. Floore at the helm, along with other enterprising businessmen and women who over the years took up the mantle to preserve it.Old Town Helotes is a historic gem inhas seen disastrous results world-wide.We need different policies. Ones that fight inflation, lowers oil prices, lowers taxes, and increases market stability. We need debt reduction and conservative fiscal management. And we need foreign policy that makes sense and reduces militaryconflict. On March 18, 1878, during a dispute regarding boundaries between their properties and other allegations, Gabriel Marnoch, eldest son of Dr. Marnoch, killed Carl Mueller. With her husband gone, Amalie struggled to keep up their once thriving business. To be able to pay for his legal defense, Gabriel began to sell parcels of the ranch. I implore you to thinkindifferenttermsthisyear. Policyisthe single most important aspect of an elected leader. Policy is what dictates spending directives, military actions, and strategies that directly affect most aspects of your life. Inflation, cost of living, standard of living, and the very lives of our military soldiers hang in the balance of policy direction. There is much to be desired from our 2 candidates. Both have questionable personal pasts and the political party pendulum of destruction swings unabashedly hard against each candidate. Personally, I wish we had a better choice. But we don’t. But Harris’ multiple increased taxes isn’t the solution. Every tax increase has historically led to increased spending and a bigger problem down the road. Recent federal jobs spending is the PRIMARY reason inflation has held higher for longer and effectively destroyed the lower and middle classes through income erosion due to some of the highest inflation rates ever. Unbridled immigration has led to unprecedented demand for housing (think where the 15 million additional people will live), thus making housing ever more expensive and unaffordable as prices increase with demand.
