Where you ask? The Gentlemen’s Barber Shop, 29102 Highway 281, owned by Gary and Margaret Rodgers. Plus, the common aspect of this veteran’s story is the fact that barber Gary Rodgers, while in the military, actually knew, met, or cut the hair of these people.“I joined the Army when I was 16 and later started cutting hair part-time to earn extramoney,”Rodgers,now83,says.“Ihada wife and two kids and needed extra income, so I went to barber college at night on the GI Bill to learn to cut hair. After basic training atFort Bragg, I was assigned to Recon for the 3rd Armored Division of Patton’s Tank Corps in Korea. About 1966 I came to San Antonio and continued to barber part-time at Fort Sam Houston, Camp Bullus, and Randolph AFB. I retired from the Army in 1972 and started barbering full-time at 5 Points in San Antonio near Baptist Hospital and then the Gunther Hotel. I opened my own barber shop in 1974 in Alamo Heights. My wife had a flower shop right next door to me.”“Almost all the photos in my Bulverde shop are of customers I have served through 57 years of military service and cutting hair,” Rodgers says. “Many just happen to be famous. At the shop I am surrounded each day by memories that are real. When I was young, I played guitar and ‘jammed’ with Roy Acuff and Chet Atkins. Elvis and I were at Fort Hood together and I also met Marilyn Monroe while I was in the Army.”“I was the first barber out here inBulverde and Spring Branch.” Rodgersadded. “I continue to do it in recognition ofthe warmth of the people I meet and myGary Rodgers joined the Army at 16.July 2023www.bsbhighlights.com 7ability to touch their lives.” “I dedicate my success to my wife Margaret. I call her ‘Boss’ to show my love of her.”
