Did You Know?BCy Connie McFall Clarkanyon Lake is a body of water as well as a census-designated place (CDP) in Comal County, calledCanyon Lake. The lake was formed in 1964 after Canyon Dam was built on the Guadalupe River. The Army Corps of Engineers was responsible for that construction as part of flood control measures along the river. The area downstream was prone to flooding and the lake has been providing water to the ever-growing developments in and out of the Comal County area. The alteration of the natural landscape and water flow impacted local ecosystems and wildlife habitats; however, over the years efforts are made to mitigate these impacts through conservation and restoration projects. The lake is over 8,200 acres and its shoreline has approximately 80 milesaround it, some of it owned by private entities. Due to a mostly limestone base of rock, the lake is usually pretty clear. In the 1970s my friends and I would scuba dive in its beautiful water. Yes, the lake is a great addition for the tourism and recreational industries in our county. Canyon Lake has eight Corps of Engineer public parks, 23 boat ramps, two marinas, campgrounds, golf course, country club, and yacht club. And, unfortunately it is at its lowest level ever. The CDP also includes a number of small, unincorporated communities surrounding the lake, including Sattler, Startzville, Canyon City, Cranes Mill, and Hancock. Communities located on the borderlines of the CDP are Fischer, Spring Branch, and Smithson Valley. The CDP includes the 12.6 square miles of water and144.3 square miles of land.In 2007 the Guadalupe-Blanco RiverAuthority opened the 64-acre Canyon Lake Gorge, under a lease from the Army Corps of Engineers, with limited public tours. I understand it is a must-see natural wonder. Whether you’re traveling along the South Shore via Hwy 3159, Hwy 2673, and Hwy 2722 or along the North Shore via Hwy 306, you’ll cross several small creeks and experience winding roads of variouselevations. And usually the view of the lake isn’t that far away. It is worth the trip.Connie McFall Clarkspotlights historical and human interest stories from the area. www.conniecanwrite.comDo You Want A Massive Rock Quarry In Your Neighborhood?Submitted By David Rollins- a concerned residentThe plan is to have a rock quarry on the corner of Highway 46 and FM 3009...That’s right across the highway from the million-dollar homes at the Waldsanger development, about a quarter mile or so from the Meyer Ranch development, and about two miles from Vintage Oaks. It seems to me like a quarry is being located very near thousands of homes valued at $600,00 and up.I did a little research and discovered the following:1. There will be constant noise pollution 24 hours a day from trucks and massive excavation. Blasts from the excavation will be heard upwards of 2-5 miles away.2. There will be an increase in air pollution. Dust and particulate matter are common byproducts of quarrying activities. These particles can be carried by wind to nearby residential areas, leading to respiratory issues and reduced air quality.3. There will be an increase in waterpollution and water shortages. Quarrying can disturb the natural water flow patterns and potentially contaminate local water sources through runoff from exposed rock faces or improper waste disposal practices. This contamination can harm our drinking water quality in the surrounding area as well as New Braunfels. Aren’t we already in a water shortage? Private wells could go dry. Also, the quarry would be on top of the Edwards Aquifer recharging zone, affecting a very sensitive area.4. There will be a decrease in Property Values. The quarry can/will deter potential buyers and lead to lower property values due to concerns about noise, pollution, water, and safety.5. There will be an increase in Traffic congestion. Isn’t traffic a bit busy now?! Increased truck traffic transporting materials to and from the quarry will lead to more congestion and danger on Hwy. 46 and FM 3009.These are my own opinions based on layman research using the internet and talking with folks who live or who have lived near a rock quarry.I understand there is a group of folks who have been working for 7 years tofight the development of the quarry.
