Did You Know?By Connie McFall ClarkB ecause we’re so fortunate to have the Guadalupe River in our back yard, when it is flowing it is a great ride for paddlers and tubers. I discovered Nichol’s Landing County Park under the Spring Branch Road (Specht’s Crossing). The scenic tree-lined Old Spring Branch Roadgives way to access Nichol’s Landing. Nichol’s Landing Paddling Trail opens access to a stretch of the Upper Guadalupe River lined with giant bald cypress trees andsun-bleached limestone shelves. The small riverfront park in SpringBranch at 7878 Old Spring Branch Road is operated by the Water Oriented Recreation District of Comal County (WORD). With parking limited to 20 cars, this hidden gem is the perfect place for a calm day on the Guadalupe River.Nichol’s Landing is a day-use only facility and is open from 9 a.m. to sunset. For mostof the year, Nichol’s Landing is free to the public, but from Memorial Day to Labor Day and at other dates whenever attendant is on duty there is a fee to access the park. Drop- offs and paddlers are welcomed to access the park without utilizing a parking space.Between Comfort and Canyon Lake, there are nearly a dozen public access points to the river. Other than Guadalupe River State Park, most access points are at country-road bridges, where parking is tenuous and it’s a long, steep climb to the water. That’s what makes Nichol’s Landing so valuable. The Nichol’s Landing Paddling Trail is 9.9 miles of river if you take out at the Rebecca Creek Bridge. Or it is 5.4 miles if getting out of the river at the FM 311 bridge. When the water is high, there can be rapids along this stretch of the Guadalupe River. Below FM 311 is a chute to the left of the islandat Mueller Falls that offers a fast water run. Below that is a chute to the left of Rust Falls that can also be fun.For more information visit Texas Parks & Wildlife.the creek that runs from the River through the heart of the original settlement on Spring Branch Road.Spring Branch, the postal delivery area (78070), encompasses 138 square miles with a population of nearly 15,000 and roughly 5800 residential addresses. It reaches from SH 46, North into Blanco County, West to Kendall County and East to Canyon Lake. Created in 1963 as part of the Zone Improvement Plan (ZIP) by the US Postal Service, it does include addresses that are within the City Limits and ETJ of Bulverde. As you might expect, this causes some confusion.By contrast, the City of Spring Branch includes 2 square miles with a population of approximately 230 and extends North from Heimer Lange Road (Fire Station 1) along US 281 to FM 306. It also reaches West along Spring Branch Road to the Guadalupe and East along FM 311 to the Guadalupe. We incorporated on November 3, 2015, by popular vote as a Type C Municipality, which consists of three Commissioners, one being the Mayor and two at large Commissioners representing the Community. The impetusConnie McFall Clarkspotlights historical and human interest stories from the area. www.conniecanwrite.comfor incorporating came from a growing concern over involuntary annexation and the strong desire to preserve our rich heritage. It was clear that the residents of our new City did not want to see a lot of bureaucracy in their new government. So, through interlocal agreements with Comal County, we have maintained essentially the same permit requirements that existed prior to annexation, with very few exceptions.Just to further complicate things, there’s yet another Spring Branch. The Spring Branch Management District (in Houston) was created by the Texas Legislature in 2003 to provide supplemental programs and public services related to mobility, safety, urban design, and economic development.
