Did You Know?Glynn Turner, a former drama teacher, met Sharon and offered her theatrical expertise. S.T.A.G.E. was born!Glynn Turner, Sharon Knibbe and Beth B. Sherfy were the incorporators of S.T.A.G.E. and the initial Board of Directors included: Sharon Knibbe, President; Carolyn George, Secretary; and Bill Smith, Treasurer. Linda Haekstra, Mildred Watson and Wendy Watson were also elected to that first Board of Directors.Plays were held in the Bulverde Community Center which also hosted other events. It was tough having to build the sets just before the performances and take them down immediately afterwards. Members’ homes were used for storage of flats and equipment. The need for aBTy Connie McFall Clarkhe Spotlight Theatre and Arts Group Etc. (S.T.A.G.E.) has a rich history in Bulverde and isextremely proud to start its 46th season this year.It all started in 1978 when area residents were given an opportunity by the Community Education Department of Comal ISD to participate in a play. ACT (Area Community Theatre) performed several plays in the Canyon Lake-Smithson Valley area but didn’t receive the support it needed to continue. In 1979 Sharon Knibbe and Betty Baker began discussions about forming a community theatre in Bulverde with about twenty-five of their neighbors.A Series on Water and Growthpermanent home was obvious and in 1985, the doors to Krause House Theatre, built by Earl and Zada Jahnsen, opened for S.T.A.G.E. productions. The Krause House Theatre in Bulverde is named after pioneer George Werner Krause who first settled on the site in the 1800s. Through generous benefactors, improvements have been made over the years.S.T.A.G.E. produces four plays a year. They have earned a reputation for producing new plays and plays written by local playwrights. The audiences have enjoyed several “Texas Premiers” over the years. Each openingdeclines in water levels. In western Comal County, water wells have dried up, forcing residents to rely on water haulers. Water levels have dropped by 350 to over 1,000 feet in some areas, primarily due to municipal pumping. The Edwards Aquifer has been severely impacted. The Edwards Aquifer Authority has implemented a Critical Period Management (CPM) Plan to sustain aquifer and spring flow levels during periods of little or no rain. This plan includes reducing the amount of groundwater permit holders may withdraw to slow the rate of decline in aquifer levels and spring discharges.Effects on Rivers:As Tourist season approaches, the Guadalupe, Comal, and San Marcos rivers are experiencing lower-than-normal water levels. US Geological Survey data from late February describes low levels:Comal River: The flow discharge near the City Tube Chute is around 83.5 cubic feet per second, while other areas like Mill Race Run and Golf Course Road are seeing all-time lows for this time of year.Guadalupe River: The river’s gage height is hovering around 1.59 feet, which is close to the worst-recorded gage height of 1.53 feet from 2009.San Marcos River: The flow rate is about one hundred cubic feet per second, which isnight’s performance is sponsored by S.T.A.G.E. to benefit a nonprofit organization in the area. The Krause House Theatre is located at 1300 Bulverde Road. Performance dates and details, as well as information on S.T.A.G.E.’s outreach programs may be found on the website at https://www. stagebulverde.org/.Connie McFall Clarkspotlights historical and human interest stories from the area. www.conniecanwrite.combelow the normal levels for this time of year. Residential Water Restrictions:The Texas Water Company has ComalCounty water usage at stage 4: Rules prohibit all outdoor water use except for uses necessary to sustain livestock and/ or vegetable gardens and fruit orchards primarily for household use. Variance requests for new sod and/or landscaping will not be approved.San Antonio Water System reduced their restriction to Stage 3. Landscape watering with an irrigation system, sprinkler or soaker hose is allowed only once a week from 5 – 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. – midnight on your designated watering day, as determined by your address. Watering with drip irrigation is allowed every Monday and Friday, but onlyfrom5a.m.–10a.m.and9p.m.– midnight. Watering with a hand-held hose is allowed any time on any day. Residential vegetable gardens may be watered by drip irrigation three days per week on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.Overall, the drought and lack of rainfall continue to create severe impacts on the four-county area north of San Antonio, affecting both the Trinity and Edwards aquifers, Canyon Lake, and the residents who rely on them for water and recreation.Drought Update: The Current SituationCBy Lou Duggananyon Lake has experiencedhistoric lows due to the prolongeddrought. As of late February, the lake was 48.5% full and down 29.5 feet. This is the lowest level since the lake was filling up in the 1960s.The low water levels have led to the closure of most boat ramps, with only one ramp open to members of Canyon Lake Marina. Non-motorized watercraft such ascanoes or kayaks can still be launched from a few county ramps. The outlook for the coming months is for drier than normal conditions, with a weak La Nina persisting in the Pacific. Rainfall outlook for the summer is in the “equal chances” category, which is better than below normal.Effects on Aquifers:The Trinity Aquifer has seen significantTHRIFT STOREOPEN:Tuesdays, Thursdays Saturdays9AM-4PM6260 US Hwy 281 N.
