They deserve it!Looking For Moms & Dads To RecognizeBWy Connie McFall Clarkhen I started writing this column in 2022, I made a call to Mayor James Mayer askingfor some background on the area of Spring Branch. He referred me to Brenda Anderson- Lindemann who published a book in 2014 entitled, “Bridging Spring Branch and Western Comal County, Texas”. It is the 160th Founding Edition: 1852 – 2012 and I have found it invaluable in researching the history of the Spring Branch and Bulverde areas. In the introduction Brenda states, “The title of this book is a special tribute to how the rich founding and history of Spring Branch area connects, links, or better yet – bridges – the Spring Branch of today.”Brenda was born to Roland and Thelma Anderson in October 1957 in Blanco. What is now the historic courthouse for Blanco County was formerly the area hospital. She was raised on a ranch in Spring BranchMayor’s Cornerand attended Sherwood Elementary of Smithson Valley, Goodwin Elementary, Canyon Junior High and Canyon High of New Braunfels. After graduating in 1976, she followed her dream to become a nurse, studying at the School of Vocational Nursing in New Braunfels. She began her research into her family and its roots at the age of sixteen and it became a passion. Her maternal history is the Mietz-Wehling family and on the paternal side, the Wehe Specht-Andersons. She was gifted an inheritance of letters, photo albums, life-sized framed photos, and diaries from her father’s mother which proved invaluable to her research. While in Austin, as a nurse in the Neurology Department at Seton Medical Center, she met Paul Lindemann, whom she married in 1987 at the historic Anhalt Farmers Hall. Making their home inThe Drought Continueshe nice folks at the Highlights publication continue to give me this opportunity to speak abouttopics that I find relevant and significant. It is difficult to find a topic that is more relevant, more significant and often more controversial than water. I’ve written on this subject in the past and likely will again, because I believe that there are many misconceptions and a general lack of awareness around groundwater, aquifers, wells and rainwater.Recent rains over past few months have improved our drought severity from “Exceptional”, but make no mistake, we are still very much in “Extreme” drought and facing an El Nino weather pattern which typically results in lower-than-average rainfall amounts. Less than 10% of rainfall amounts ever make it to recharging the Trinity aquifer, which provides water to most of our wells in Comal County, and it can take years to get there. It is widely believed that the Trinity has never fully recovered from the catastrophic drought of the 1950’s.Our other major water source, Canyon Lake, is currently 60% full, a level that we haven’t seen in decades. With less thany James Mayer, MayorBTfavorable rainfall prospects, we can only expect that the level will continue to fall.Dr. Larry Sunn (RainBees.com), one of our most knowledgeable local water experts, shares this information, and a LOT more in his presentations. He likes to say that his intent is NOT to alarm you but hopes that you are alarmed when you understand the facts.Water conservation, regardless of where your water comes from, is essential. We must be better stewards of our most essential natural resource. Invest in rainwater harvesting if you are able. Rainbees.com is a great place to start with a free consultation. Educate yourself and others. The Comal Trinity Water Groundwater Conservation District is a great resource to understand all things water.
