Did You Know?Instagram.Nine-pin bowling alleys are the samelength with the balls and pins the same size as regular ten-pin bowling. Instead of the ten pins set by a machine, the nine pins (eight white around one red) are manually placed by pinsetters. One game consists of six frames with six players on a team. Each player gets to throw twice but not necessarily in the same order or at the same set of pins. If a player knocks all nine of the first set of nine pins, they get nine points. However, if the red pin is left standing alone, then the score is twelve points. If there are multiple pins left standing after the first roll, then another bowler throws. For a different bit of fun for the family, call the Bulverde Bowling Club at (830) 438- 3065 to see what dates and times open bowling is available.businesses. The game was first popularized in Germany, where it was known as kegelspiel, around 300 AD. Martin Luther is credited with settling on nine as the ideal number of pins. The game moved throughout Europe, the Scandinavian countries, and finally to the United States, with the earliest known reference to bowling at pins in America made by author Washington Irving about 1818 in “Rip Van Winkle”. Ninepins was the most popular form of bowling in much of the United States from colonial times untilCommentarythe early nineteenth century, when it was outlawed in many areas and replaced by tenpins.”Thankfully, you can still find nine-pin bowling right here in Bulverde, one of the few left in Central Texas. Hidden away behind the Bulverde Community Center at Ammann Road and Bulverde Road is the Bulverde Bowling Club, in business since 1956. They are a member of the Tri-County 9-Pin Bowling Association and boast of six beautifully-maintained lanes. The club is member-based and holds annual meetings and special fundraising events. The club hosts leagues, children’s classes and other events as requested by outside groups.
