Manyof us spend time searching for the perfect card to convey our feelings, often pairing it with a thoughtful gift or a romantic dinner at a favorite restaurant.Interestingly, the origins of Valentine’s Day were not rooted in love but were quite dark and unsettling, dating back to Roman times. Over the centuries, it was romanticized, particularly by Shakespeare, and evolved into the celebration we know today. During the Middle Ages, handmade paper cards became a popular tradition, eventually making their way to the New World. In 1913, Hallmark Cards of Kansas City, Missouri, began mass-producing Valentine’s cards, forever changing the month of February.Thankfully, the modern meaning of Valentine’s Day has taken on a much brighter and more heartwarming tone. Today, it’s a time to show appreciation for our spouses, significant others, and even children and grandchildren. Who remembers the joy of childhood Valentine’s celebrations— exchanging cute cards with classmates and heart-shaped candies with fun messages? We hope your February is filled with love, laughter, and wonderful memories. We were thrilled to receive wonderful entries for our Sweetheart Contest! You can find all the heartfelt submissions on page 6. Each one is precious and unique, making it incredibly difficult to select just one winner. Ultimately, the winner will be chosen by luck, so stay tuned for the announcement in our March issue! The lucky recipient will receive a $50 check—perfect for enjoying something fun together. As always, we’re eager to showcase inspiring stories from our community. Do you know of a great cause or a neighbor making a positive impact? Perhaps a young achiever excelling in sports, school, or another area? We’d love to hear about it!
