These gross- looking, predator birds, often seen along Texas highways eating roadkill, are actually a protected species and may not be randomly killed. They are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and are managed by both federal and stategovernments. There are 23 types of vultures in theworld. Texas has only two species, the Turkey Vulture and the Black Vulture. These two species represent one of the largest group of raptors within the United States, second only to the Bald Eagle and Golden Eagle. The “Turkey” Vulture is the most common species in our state.Research suggests that Turkey Vultures have excellent vision and the most acute sense of smell of any bird on Earth. This allows them to locate dead animals from great distances. Author Jed Winer described this role in an article for National Geographic Kids: “Sure, eating dead animals is pretty gross,” he wrote. “Even naturalistBlack VultureCharles Darwin described the turkey vulture as a ‘disgusting bird.’ But did you know that vultures serve a very important purpose in the ecosystem? By swooping in to remove animal remains, these scavenger birds clean up the environment and help prevent diseases from spreading.”Vultures are considered “social” because they feed, roost, and fly in groups. And, that’s how people generally see these birds in nature—in large groups. They are carnivorous and primarily eat only dead animals. Author Melissa Mayntz explained how these birds find their prey in her article 20+ Fun Facts about Vultures: “It is a myth that vultures circle dying animals waiting to feed. These birds are powerful fliers and soar on thermals (columns of rising air) while they look for food, but they cannot sense when an animal is dying. When they locate a carcass by smell, sight, or the sound of other birds feeding, they approach it quickly before other predators find it”By Lou DugganGrade School - continued from page 9 shown every day, but what is great about a holiday, is that everyone shares and celebrates it at the same time.
