Did You Know?BMy C o n n i e M c F a l l C l a r kany early settlers in Comal County homesteaded or were granted land as they arrived inthe area. A lot of families were fortunate enough to be able to create a cemetery on their homestead for their loved ones to be interred after death. The Koch family allocated space for their final resting place on land located at what is now Koch Drive off of Casey Road and Bulverde Road. There are 14 marked and 2 unmarked burial sites.Carl Koch selected the site for use by his family and the Werner Krause family who lived across the road. The first family member to be buried there was Carl and Elizabeth’s son Otto in 1874. In 1876 daughter Louise was buried there. Two more of Carl’s children plus he and wife Elizabeth are also buried there. The first Krause to restin the Koch Cemetery was Karl Krause, son of Werner and Maria. In 1885, Karl, who was Zada’s mother’s 13-year-old brother, was killed by a lightning strike while standing on the Krause porch watching a thunderstorm.Edgar Bremer married Werner and Maria’s daughter Emma Krause. One of their children, Walter died in his teens of a fever and was the first Bremer to be buried in Koch Cemetery. In 1922, Jerome Erben, the six-month-old grandson of Edgar and Emma Bremer died of diphtheria and was buried there. Werner Krause was the most recent burial in Koch Cemetery in 1932. Wife Maria died in 1914.In August 1924, Moritz Koch, son of Carl Koch deeded the cemetery to Edgar Bremer and now his granddaughter Zada Bremer Jahnsen is in possession of the original deed. The cemetery for the Koch-Krause-Bremer families is maintained by the descendants of the three families. Earl Jahnsen, husband of Zada is buried there, close to the homestead he loved with one of their sons maintaining the legacy.Many thanks to Zada Bremer Jahnsen for sharing her history and invaluable knowledge about the area. The total fines add up to nearly half a million dollars.Bexar RaisesThe San Antonio Report highlighted budget raises for Bexar County officials. “Bexar County Commissioners voted (in late August) to again raise their own salaries, bringing Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai’s salary from about $205,000 to nearly $209,000 per year for the 2026 fiscal year. The county’s four commissioners will make about $165,000 per year, including a $9,000 per year car allowance. The county judge also receives executive security detail, which provides his transportation. In addition to the county commissioners, the raise would apply to the district attorney, the county clerk, the district clerk, the tax assessor-collector, justices of the peace and probate court judges. Bexar County’s average household income was $82,500 in 2025.” Spurs ArenaPACs are attempting to sway voters on Spurs arena vote.
