Fatigue: The Pervasive Problem Which Must Be Examined Carefullyy Dr. Donna BeckerBWe have all experienced fatigue, from over work, staying up toolate, and just plain not sleeping well due to many causes. But what about fatigue that persists? Comprehensive labs may hold the answer and guide anintervention.A peri-menopausal patient came to myoffice with the complaint, “Too tired to do anything”. At first, she seemed to fit the category of simply doing too much. She owned 2 companies, had 2 children and a husband who loved her. She said that on weekends if at all possible, she stayed in bed. She no longer accompanied her husband on company social events. She was typical of the person who takes care of the whole world, while neglecting herself— her husband had actually demanded she do “something,” and her friends recommended me,She had not seen a physician in several years. She had periods which lasted 10 days and were “heavy”. The medical definition of a “heavy period” is using 20 products or more per cycle. She told me she easily met those criteria. Her labs revealed striking iron deficiency. I explained to her that it was probably due to her excessive flow, but that she neededSleep Apnea? Or, poor sleep which may be due to lack of progesterone. Labs help the doctor find and treat the cause of pervasive fatigue.Dr. Donna Becker, practicing physician for over 30 yrs. I also ordered a pelvic sonogram to rule out a bulky fibroid as the cause of the excessive periods. I explained to her that iron carries oxygen to all the body, and without enough carriers of oxygen, her body had no energy.I prescribed a type of iron combined with vitamin C to enhance absorption. I gave her progesterone in a cyclic fashion, less the first 2 weeks of her cycle and more the last 2 weeks. I prescribed vaginally applied testosterone. As always, laboratory analysis guides therapy. Mood disorders may be a cause of fatigue, but again, the doctor should first rule out a treatable cause. Low thyroid?By Lou Duggan“In the shadows of our Nation, a grim reality persists,” claims Bob Unanue in an April issue of The Washington Times. “Tens of thousands of Hispanic migrant children in the U.S. have fallen prey to the depraved clutches of human traffickers, their futures sold for profit and power in a $150 billion-a-year industry...”Unanue is a board member for theAmerica First Policy Institute and chair of the Hispanic Leadership Coalition. He is also President and Chief Executive Officer of Goya Foods. He also served as executive producer of the movie Sound of Freedom, released on July 4, 2023 by Angel Studios. It has become one of the most successful independent films in history, grossing more than $250 million. Goya Cares foundation (goyacares.com) was established by Unanue’s Goya Foods to better serve communities for combating child trafficking and education on child mental health awareness.“This powerful film reinforced my resolve not only to shed light on this evil,” says Unanue, “but also to actively work toward solutions that protect the innocence and freedom of our children... From the darkest corners of the internet and social media to the seedy underbelly of our streets, these innocent souls are subjected to unspeakable horrors — sexual exploitation, forced labor, organ trafficking, and even the draining of their lifeblood. The U.S. is the top destination for child trafficking. The Hispanic community, sadly, bears the brunt of targeting and exploitation, serving as unwitting pawns in the hands of the morally bankrupt – akin to sheep led to slaughter.”“The very conditions that make Hispanic migrants susceptible to exploitation have been exacerbated to unprecedented levels,” says Unanue. “...open-border policies have effectively created a chain gang of Hispanic children, where grueling labor and abhorrent acts of exploitation run rampant. In our country, traffickers are targeting Hispanics the most for this evil practice. With Hispanics projected to become the largest minority group by 2050 and the U.S. the biggest consumer of child exploitation, this poses a grave threat to our Nation’s safety and security.”“We cannot remain passive spectators as our children are bought and sold like slaves,” says Unanue. “For every child ensnaredin the web of trafficking, a piece of their innocence is forever lost. Let us stand united in defense of the most vulnerable among us, refusing to betray the values that define us as a Nation. Anything less is a surrender to the malevolent forces that seek to corrupt and annihilate all that we hold dear.”“Human trafficking is the most common form of modern-day slavery” reports the San Antonio Police Department web site for human trafficking. “Victims are estimated to number in the millions across the world. Females and children are trafficked most frequently, often forced into the commercial sex industry for little or no money.”“Locally, Meant to Soar Foundation (MTS) is one of the corporate partners of Goya Cares,” says Executive Director Elsa Ezell. “Meant To Soar focuses on children ages 6 to 13, throughout Bexar and Comal Counties, who have experienced the trauma of parental drug addiction or trafficking. Utilizing counseling, arts, and personalized physical activities, we help these children to realize their tremendous value, gain confidence in their uniqueness, and receive healing. One of our kids wanted to be part of NASA, so now we are working on that.”“As a guardian of these children we break the cycle of substance abuse and human trafficking by identifying children with wounded hearts and equipping them to be a strong generation” Ezell says. “Meant to Soar empowers children to overcome the generational trauma created by substance abuse and human trafficking. Love is missing in the hearts of these children, so we fill their broken lives with love. We give these children a chance to learn and grow.”Are you a family member or a victim who needs support from a partner? Meant To Soar offers resources for overcoming child trafficking.
